Highlights of this route include the Puerta de Purchena, a vibrant nerve centre that emerged in the mid-19th century after the demolition of the city walls, and the emblematic Edificio de las Mariposas, the work of the prestigious architect Trinidad Cuartara Cassinello.<\/p>\n<p>The itinerary continues towards the Mercado Central de Abastos, opened in 1893 and an outstanding example of iron architecture, which fuses iron and glass structures inside with an attractive pedestrian complex outside. This market, comparable to Las Halles in Paris or La Boqueria in Barcelona, \u200b\u200breflects the city&#8217;s economic boom driven by mining and agricultural exports, and offers the chance to sample fresh produce and local tapas, such as the exclusive Tomate Raf.
